To have an optimal measurement in continuous pH meters pH probes should be replaced periodically. Depending on the conditions of use, maintenance and the quality of the probe, its life span can vary from 3 to 12 or more months, since the pH electrode is a sensor based on an electrochemical cell. This cell begins to suffer wear from the moment of its manufacture until the end of its useful life. Careful handling and good cleaning are essential for a good result in the measurements. Before measuring or calibrating, the electrode should be rinsed with distilled water. Never touch the electrode with your fingers, paper or anything other than water.
Calibration
To calibrate the instrument, standard solutions (Buffer) are used, considering that the values that are expected to be measured must be within the range of the standards used. The first calibration standard should be pH 7 or pH 6.864 (neutral pH), and then the corresponding pattern for acid values or bases according to the working range. Between each calibration always rinse with distilled water and then remove excess water by shaking the electrode.
Measurement
Dip the tip of the electrode at least 2.5 cm into the solution to be measured, wait a minute for the reading to stabilize and read. After each measurement the electrode must be rinsed.
Storage
After finishing measuring, the electrode should be rinsed with distilled water and stored. This can be done in the cap of the electrode or a bottle, in both cases, leaving the electrode moistened with a storage solution that can be based on 3.5M KCl or failing in buffer 4. Do not use moistened cottons or anything that touches the bulb of the electrode, because it is damaged very easily.
Deep cleaning
If the electrode requires further cleaning, either by measuring in wastewater or with a lot of color, a cleaning solution based on 0.1% hydrochloric acid must be used, submerging the tip of the electrode for at least 15 minutes.
