Carbon dioxide plays a vital role in plant life, without it plants would not grow and other life would die out immediately. Plants, algae and cyanobacteria fix carbon dioxide, water and light during photosynthesis to produce energy from carbohydrates. Oxygen is released as a by-product of this process. Photosynthesis does not occur in the dark, so plants use little carbon dioxide in the dark.
